September 11th, Patriot Day – Remember the Heroes

Nine years later the tragic events of September 11th, 2001 are still engrained in my mind, body and soul.  I still feel numb when I look back, much like most Americans who were glued to the TV and radio for days after the Twin Towers fell. My kids at the time were very young and now I realize they don’t really remember that day. The lessons that I share with them about 9-11 relate more to the outpouring of support that the world offered to American’s than to the cowards who killed so many innocent people.

There were so many people in America and across the globe that offered assistance and never in my life have I ever felt more united as a country and as an American than on that day. American Flags were sold out, blood donation centers were backed up, people were sending money to the Red Cross, and there was a huge outpouring of support.  We all wanted to do more but the reality was that there wasn’t much more we could do.

As we reflect on this day, I remember the devastation of 9-11 and the courageous heroes who made a difference. I also remember how all of our lives were changed forever. Let us remember that the American spirit is alive and well and as we heal as a country from this attack we look forward to become united once again as we were on that tragic day.
