Sorry but there’s no show today due to just being busy with work and family. Not bad problems to have at all but I realized last night after getting home late from watching both of my son’s compete in high school sports and the two early work days I’ve had that I really needed to sleep in this morning. Hopefully this is the season’s last snow storm until Fall and Winter return.
It’s one of those weeks that there are too many tasks on the list to get done and not enough time in the day complete them all. So I’m using my show time to catch up while it’s nice and quiet.

Elevator Radio Show 528 - Week 4/3/2019
This is one of those shows where one unexpected article link, had me thinking about recalls and elevators and escalators as they related to the CPSC. After reading and sharing one listed below, I got to thinking about the question of whether there were other recalls out there as they related that I hadn’t seen and decided to do some quick digging. What I found was a little concerning. I need to fully disclose my day job involves many things but manufacturing and selling door interlocks and mechanical door switches for freight/passenger elevators. We are not, however a player in the residential elevator market. Also, I’m not an expert when it comes to residential elevators nor anything for that matter so take what I say with a grain of salt. With all of this out of the way I ask one simple question on the show today which is a good one.

I was truly moved at the number of you who emailed me the news regarding the fatality in ND. While an investigation it still pending initial reports indicate he was electrocuted while servicing an escalator. Every time I read one of these articles my heart sinks and I feel like my words fall on deaf ears. Your emails, sharing the news of this tragedy, helped me realize that safety is a priority to so many of you which I find a small amount of comfort in. Keep the Bosch, his family, especially his wife and two daughters in your thoughts and prayers.

There’s a wide variety of article links shared on today’s show. The first one pounds home the concern for safety in the job site as it relates not to construction or maintenance of buildings but in other services like demolition and wrecking. It’s a terrible accident and reminder of just how fragile life is and how it can change in an instant.

It’s one of those shows where there aren’t a lot of stories to cover but the ones I do and the thoughts I share should be ones everyone contemplates both in your office and out in the field. We’re talking about liability, safety and at what point is it okay to fire a customer or lockout/tag out an elevator when you deem it to be unsafe or when elevator/building owners choose to ignore recommendations for upgrades/improvements and simply just want to spend as little money as possible on getting them back running again.

I received many emails, texts and phone calls regarding the show and while I do not think I did it justice I truly hope some of the information I shared sinks in with any one and every one who reads it. Most importantly share it with your coworkers, talk about the statistics, how can some of those accidents or fatalities be reduced? Each of us has a part in the work we do and ensuring those around us are safe and it doesn’t take much for it all to go south. Continue to talk about the report and never let it die. On today’s show we focus on one thing and one thing only, a report released by CPWR | The Center for Construction Research and Training focusing solely on Death and Injuries involving elevators or escalators in construction and the general population. How dangerous is it working on or around this type of equipment? You may have had an idea before, but the numbers will confirm what many of us already knew, it’s dangerous. The statistical data in the report share some pretty concerning numbers. Sadly, the answers to why some are as high as they are is not clear. One thing is for certain, we each need to do our part make sure we’re safe as well as those around us.

EESF Hires New Executive Director
The Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation (EESF) Board of Directors is pleased to announce it has hired Shelly Johnson as the new Executive Director of EESF.
Shelly has led non-profit organizations for over 25 years including serving as executive director of the Massage Therapy Foundation, the Neuroscience Nursing Foundation, the American Massage Therapy Association, the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses and the American Society for Healthcare Materials Management of the American Hospital Association. She has served in other leadership positions with the American Society for Quality and ACA International.
In her previous positions, Shelly has grown her organizations to greater size and impact. At the heart of her work has been ensuring that each organization strategically and effectively carries out its mission and that contributors and other stakeholders experience high value from the organization.
"I am honored to be chosen as EESF’s new executive director,” says Shelly. “The work of EESF is so important and I’m looking forward to partnering with the Board and our program director to carry out EESF’s mission. It’s an exciting time for EESF and I’m excited to be part of it.”

My apologies for not produce a show or post the last two weeks. To be honest it’s just been the perfect storm with being busy at work and with large unexpected projects that have taken much more of my time than I had to spare. Right now the time I had to produce the show is being spent playing catch up at work. On a personal note, everything is good and there’s nothing to worry about, I just need to put family and work…..and some sleep ahead of this program. I appreciate all the emails, texts and phone calls regarding the show vanishing and assure you I’ll have the show back as soon as I’m able to produce it. Thank you for your patience.

11/7/18 - Computer Demons at It Again
I spent the last two hours on the shows backup production computer after it failed to start. I’ve finally gotten it to the point where now have gotten it to the point where I have a Windows screen but it’s slower than molasses. I’m going through the diagnostic functions right now to figure out what exactly has failed and why.
Needless to say there’s no show today. Maybe one of these weeks I’ll make a video showing what it looks like to smash one in our 5 ton press brake. Now that would be fun.
On a more serious note, this Sunday is Veterans Day. Make sure you go out of your way to thank any veteran you see. Call those you know personally on the phone or email/text them. They are the reason why we all enjoy the freedoms we hold close to our hearts today. We must never forget this and it is important to share this with our kids and grandkids. Thank you Veterans for your service!

It is so sad that we lost another elevator mechanic this past week. I share that article along with another which goes to show that even the most safety conscious can be hurt or fatally injured in their everyday work environments. It’s been a busy week here at work and at home and I realized last night I’m going to need as much sleep as I can get which is never easy. My two boys high school football team made the playoffs and with sectionals starting on Saturday, and the venue a three hour trip away, I need a few more hours of sleep this week than I typically get. I’m excited for my boys and their accomplishments as they, their teammates and coaches have worked hard this season to get to where they are. While they might be the underdog in Saturday’s match up, I’m certain they will play in with the same drive and conviction they’ve played each of their games this season. I’ll give you a full report of the game next week.
